The Philippines is very prone to many disasters due to its geographical location. This is because we are located in the area known as the ring of fire which is a 40,000 km arc of volcanoes and oceanic trenches which make us prone to earthquakes, typhoons and tsunamis.
Having emergency plans against typhoons are vital to survival here. This also applies to Tierra De Maria since it is only 4.90 km from the nearest large body of water which is the Laguna lake. Typhoons for those who don’t know are rotating weather systems that bring strong winds which are very destructive and create strong tidal waves thus causing floods in areas without proper drainage.
Typhoons are one of the biggest natural disaster threats to the Philippines and preparation for them is very important since they are very destructive. Many of the residents know this and have set up their homes in ways that they’ll be sturdy and won’t flood easily. Some have slanted garages for easier draining while others have a terrace design which gives multiples levels of protection against flooding.
Throughout Tierra De Maria there are also gutters and drains to keep flooding, people make it a point to keep those drains clear of obstructions.
The location of Tierra De Maria is relatively far from the nearest lake and would not be as affected as other homeowners associations.
1. To teach residents how to make effective evacuation plans so they themselves are prepared for a typhoon.
Tierra De Maria does not have any large open areas such as covered courts or evacuation centers so the next best thing is to teach the residents how to safely evacuate after a typhoon if necessary.
Having emergency plans against Earthquakes is vital to survival here. This also applies to Tierra De Maria since it is only 3.50 km from the nearest fault line and 4.90 km from the nearest large body of water which is the Laguna lake.
In the event of an earthquake many buildings will collapse if not built well, this is why houses in this homeowners association are built mostly with concrete and are no more than 2 floors high.
The location of Tierra De Maria is relatively far from the nearest fault line and would not be affected like other homeowners associations. In my research I also didn’t find any pre existing protocols regarding earthquake damage mitigation so here are my proposals :
1. To have yearly check ups on local structures such as Lamp poles and electricity poles since these are most likely to fall during an earthquake.
2. To teach residents how to make effective evacuation plans so they themselves are prepared for an earthquake.
